Using CBD for pets is gaining popularity

CBD has taken over the health and wellness market, and CBD for pets (like these incredible Bacon flavored drops your puppy will love!) is booming right alongside it. Many pet parents have experienced unbelievable results using CBD for their pets, with claims that the isolated cannabinoid calms their nervous dog’s anxiety or relieves achy joints in their senior cat. Even horse owners have jumped on the train after trying CBD for their animal and seeing the positive changes present itself.

Is using CBD for pets safe?

The FDA has not approved any CBD product created for pets, just like the human market. There is not an across-the-board answer to that question knowing that information. Hudson Institute, D.C. based think tank and research center says lack of an FDA certification “does not mean that the drug or device used for this non evaluated indication is not safe, effective or beneficial for that particular usage.” Therefore, making the choice to try CBD for your pet should come after a discussion with your pet’s veterinarian. While your veterinarian may not be able to legally prescribe CBD for your pet, they can guide you in the right direction and hopefully give you the greenlight to try it at your own discretion. Many pet owners have had meaningful conversations with their vet about trying CBD for their pet, and in some cases their vet even recommends it. Though vets in certain states may choose not to talk about it for fear of losing their license, the governor of California signed a bill in 2018 allowing vets to discuss CBD with their patients.

Cornell University did a study exploring CBD for dogs who have arthritis. According to the study: “Dogs received each of two treatments: CBD oil (2 mg/kg) or placebo oil every 12 h. Each treatment lasted for 4 weeks with a 2-week washout period. Baseline veterinary assessment and owner questionnaires were completed before initiating each treatment and at weeks 2 and 4.” The study’s results say, “Clinically, canine brief pain inventory and Hudson activity scores showed a significant decrease in pain and increase in activity (p < 0.01) with CBD oil. Veterinary assessment showed decreased pain during CBD treatment (p < 0.02). No side effects were reported by owners.” In other words, these arthritic dogs experienced no side effects, decreased pain, and an increase in activity. Keeping studies like these in your arsenal of research can help weigh the pros and cons of using CBD for your pet.

What are some reasons to try CBD for your pet?

Many people use CBD to combat arthritis in their pets as the study explores. This shouldn’t be surprising to anybody who knows about CBD, as many humans use CBD for all kinds of things, too. General issues without a formal prescription is another reason people opt for the plant-based supplement for their animal.

CBD works by interacting with your pet's endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system has two known receptors, CB1 and CB2. Cognitive functions like memory, mood, appetite, etc. are controlled by the CB1 receptors in the brain. CB2 receptors are located more so in the immune system, which explains why manipulation of the CB2 receptors helps combat inflammation. CBD interacts with our CB2 receptors to ease all kinds of issues and bring new life to your pet.

What should you look for when shopping for CBD for your pet?

Because there isn’t a standard set by a regulating body on CBD safety, you may have to do some research and make certain choices for yourself. However, there are a general set of standards that can extend to everyone looking to purchase a CBD product for their pet.

1. Make sure the products are manufactured according to GMP certified standards.

All of botanCBD's products meet Good Manufacturing Practice and European Good Manufacturing Practice requirements. These groups require the quality of certified products to be impeccable. Not all CBD is GMP and EU GMP certified, so check that your brand is before proceeding to use it on your animal.

2. Make sure each ingredient is safe for your pet.

CBD oils and products typically contain other ingredients either for flavor or added therapeutic benefit. Specifically, our flavors are AAFCO approved and safe for pet consumption. Most CBD products marketed to pets use essential oils and cheap online flavorings which can be toxic to your furry friend. Read the ingredients list of each product you browse and be sure there is nothing unsafe for your pet in the product or an ingredient your animal may be allergic to. A brand should also maintain consistent products and control their production environment in order to get your business.

3. Ensure the brand you choose is transparent

The CBD brand you choose should always be open and honest about their products. While some proprietary information may be kept to themselves, a company should always be able to tell you about the standards and procedures they have in place to ensure a safe and high-quality product for your animal.
