Using CBD oil for anxiety is not FDA-approved, however many doctors are beginning to share the potential benefits of trying CBD for anxiety with their patients. Pre-clinical evidence strongly supports CBD as a potential treatment for anxiety. While more research is needed, this study published in 2015 reads, “We found that existing preclinical evidence strongly supports CBD as a treatment for generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder when administered acutely; however, few studies have investigated chronic CBD dosing.
Another study explored how CBD can affect both sleep and anxiety. The study followed 103 adults total, with 72 of those adults using CBD to combat their anxiety. The research found that anxiety decreased in 57 patients or 79.2% of them within the first month and remained decreased during the rest of the study.
A different study published in 2019 explored the use of CBD on mice with Fragile X Syndrome, a genetic condition that causes intellectual disability. One of the symptoms of this disorder is heightened anxiety and hyperactive behavior. The male mice received either five or 20 milligrams of CBD and it was found that the mice displayed fewer anxiety-related behaviors in all areas of the test. The research noted that the effects of CBD were subtle and did not impair locomotion. The cognitive levels of the mice also remained un-influenced by the administered CBD. This research has led many to the conclusion that taking CBD oil for anxiety might be an alternative to common anxiety medications or treatments. It is important to speak with a CBD-educated physician that knows your medical history before making any changes in your medication or health routine.
Aside from studies using animal models, this double-blind study looked at 37 Japanese teenagers with social anxiety disorder that were between the ages of 18 and 19 years old. The teenagers were either given a placebo or 300 mg of CBD oil. The research showed CBD to decrease anxiety based on both the Fear of Negative Evaluation Questionnaire and the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale, and concluded that CBD oil for anxiety could be a useful option in people with social anxiety disorder. The study considered it comparable to Paroxetine, a commonly prescribed anxiety medication. Taking CBD oil for anxiety might have the potential to be an alternative to this medication, which is known to cause side effects.
